Nigerian international Yakubu Aiyegbeni could be on his way to Goodison Park after he was left out by Middlesbrough for this weekend's Premier League game.
Here, we look at how the 24-year-old fared last season compared to his possible future team-mates.
Yakubu has become an established Premier League striker since he arrived on these shores in 2003. He has scored 53 goals in four seasons in England with Portsmouth and Middlesbrough.
However, with the arrival of Mido he seems to have played his last game for the Teesside club.
Everton manager David Moyes will be keen to wrap up his signature before the end of the August deadline.
If he finds his way to the blue side of Liverpool, the stocky Nigerian will have to contend with Everton's main man up front Andy Johnson.
The ex-Crystal Palace striker has been called up for next week's England friendly with Germany and will be keen to hold on to his position at Goodison Park.
Yakubu outscored Johnson by one goal last season and had more shots on goal than any other Everton forward.
The African also showed his versatility as he set up four of Boro's goals.
However, Johnson's fox-in-the-box attitude means he is more effective in terms of finishing.
With Johnson and Yakubu, Moyes will also have two penalty experts.
Yakubu could also link up with his compatriot Victor Anichebe who scored last week in Everton's opening win against Wigan. The Nigerian hit the net three times last season, converting 21 per cent of his chances.
James McFadden will have his work cut out. The arrival of Yakubu could put in doubt the Scottish international's future with the Toffees. His two goals in 2006-07 were a disappointing tally. So far this season he has only known the subs bench.
While teenager James Vaughan is still reeling from a dislocated shoulder, his impressive stats (one goal every 164 minutes, 44 per cent successful crosses) will make him a contender when he finds his fitness again.
