Jonathan Walters believes record-breaking Stoke City can still get better

Jonathan Walters feels Stoke can get even better after surpassing their record Premier League points tally.

Stoke’s 0-0 draw at relegated Burnley puts them on 51 points for the season, the most they have ever achieved, and means they finish in the top 10 for the second year on the bounce.

That feat hasn’t been achieved since the 1970s but Walters is already looking ahead to next season, in which he is confident further improvements can be made.

“We were (aware that a draw would give us a record PL points tally) and give us back-to-back top 10 finishes for the first time in 40 years as well,” he said.

“It wasn’t a classic, but we dug in, we got the point we needed and we’re guaranteed to finish ninth now and that’s an improvement on last year and that’s what we wanted to do.

“All in all it’s been a successful season and we go to Liverpool last game of the season where hopefully we can get nine points.

“The manager deserves huge credit as do all the staff and the players as well.

“For everyone involved it’s a great credit because we work so hard and that’s what we’ve done all season.

“We’ve had some bad injuries and people carrying injuries during the season but we’ve dug in. We set ourselves targets and we want to  improve year-on-year.

“We don’t want to stand still. We want to improve again next year. Hopefully we can keep everyone together and bring in players to improve the squad and push forward.”
