Troy Deeney thinks Watford are equipped to face Premier League test

Troy Deeney is relishing the chance to pit his wits against the country’s best defenders next season following Watford’s promotion to the Premier League.

The Hornets ended a seven-year absence from the top flight last week with victory at Brighton, before letting the Championship title slip into the hands of Bournemouth after a late draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

But Deeney refused to let the disappointment of missing out on the title dampen his mood and, on a guest appearance on Goals on Sunday, said he was confident both he and his side could make the transition - with the right recruitment.

Asked how Watford would maintain their Premier League status, he said: “It’s going to take a lot of hard work next season and a bit of luck.

“From a club point of view, we’re going to need some investment obviously, that goes without saying.

“But there are ways of doing it now, do we do a Burnley model and be sensible or do we go the QPR way.

“If we can find a happy medium of that and bring in the right players we should be alright.”

“We’ve got some very technically gifted players. Without putting any extra pressure on them, the likes of Almen Abdi and Matej Vydra will flourish in the Premier League.

“And then there's myself. I’ve scored 20 goals three seasons in a row now so theres an added expectation to score now as well.

“People know what I’m about now; I’m big and I’d like to see what some of these nice defenders have to say when I push them around!”
