Ray Parlour Martin Skrtel could face a similar suspension to Diego Costa after he stamped on David De Gea at the end of Liverpool's defeat to Man Utd

Ray Parlour believes Martin Skrtel is likely to be handed a retrospective ban for appearing to stamp on David de Gea during Sunday's Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester United.

Former Arsenal midfielder Parlour told the Morning View on Sky Sports News HQ the Liverpool defender could face the same punishment given to Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

Costa was retrospectively found guilty of stamping during a Capital One Cup clash against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in January and was given a three-game ban.

Parlour said of Skrtel: "I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get done for that. He knows exactly what he’s doing there.

"He stands on De Gea - similar to Costa. He knows the keeper is coming out, a little stamp on his calf. I definitely think there will be a punishment. If Costa got a three-game ban, then Skrtel will be similar."

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was shown a straight red for a stamp on United's Ander Herrera early in the second half at Anfield and fellow Morning View guest Andy Walker insists the visitors were also fortunate not to see their numbers cut following Phil Jones' rash tackle on Jordan Henderson.

"Jones could easily have seen red too," Walker said.

“Sometimes, when a ref has sent somebody off from one team in such a huge fixture, a lot of referees like to even it up and there was an opportunity there to show Jones a red card.

“And had he shown him a red card I don’t think too many would have complained. It was high, late and some would have shown a red for that.

“It’s a very subjective view. There’s no definitive on what is a dangerous foul.”
