Southampton striker Emmanuel Mayuka is almost certain to miss Zambia’s last group game in the Africa Cup of Nations after sustaining an injury as he celebrated a goal.
Mayuka, 24, was taken to hospital in an ambulance and is believed to have suffered a serious groin injury after falling awkwardly as he performed an acrobatic celebration during the 2-1 defeat to Tunisia.
The forward fired his side ahead just before the hour-mark but was forced off on a stretcher and then replaced a number of minutes later by Jackson Mwanza.
And it will cause some concern for Saints boss Ronald Koeman, who already has a lengthy injury list that includes the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Victor Wanyama, Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin.
Mayuka featured for Zambia in their opening group B game – a 1-1 draw with DR Congo – but has not played for Southampton since the Capital One Cup defeat to Sheffield United in mid-December.
Mayuka signed for the Saints from Young Boys in 2012 and has made just six appearances for the club this term.
