Newcastle United goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has been passed fit for Sunday's derby against Sunderland, according to Sky sources.

The 21-year-old reported for training on Thursday and was assessed by the club’s medical staff, with his shoulder injury deemed not as bad as first feared.

Alnwick was injured during the Magpies’ 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday and was initially rated a doubt for Sunday’s Premier League game at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are already without senior goalkeepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot and they would have been left with only 17-year-old Freddie Woodman if Alnwick had been ruled out.

Boss Alan Pardew was considering looking to the emergency loan market - the deadline is 12 noon on Friday - but he no longer needs to pursue that option with the Premier League.

Pardew said after Newcastle’s defeat at White Hart Lane: "It is something we might have to look at because there is no way that a 17-year-old that's our fourth-choice should be allowed to go in goal at this level. We will perhaps talk to the Premier League about Jak's situation."
