Cesc Fabregas believes a summer switch to Chelsea has allowed him to produce 'some of the best football of my career'.

The former Arsenal midfielder has been in sparkling form since returning to English football from Barcelona.

He has helped Chelsea to make an unbeaten start to their Premier League title bid and progress safely through to the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League.

I chose this challenge because I felt it could be this way. I didn’t come here to just play well and that’s it. I came here to win trophies and if I could play well and enjoy myself, all the better.

Fabregas has been deployed in his favoured playmaking position by Jose Mourinho and has responded by producing a number of impressive displays, with the Spain international adding another four assists to his tally during a 5-0 European mauling of Schalke in midweek.

He said on raising his game since moving to Stamford Bridge: “Right now, I am playing some of the best football of my career.

“One hundred per cent this is my best position. I feel more in control of the game, I touch the ball all the time, I feel happy. I go and get the ball from here, from there, I can go forward, Oscar drops deep.

“I feel free, I feel confident, I feel in control and that’s what I like the most in football.

“Sometimes in the past three, four years in the national team and Barcelona, I was playing like a No 9. I had to do it for the team but here, where I am playing today, it’s where I enjoy my football the most.

“I am playing next to great players and they are playing very well and helping me. We have a very young, talented team.

“The mood is great and hopefully, it will continue to grow as the season goes on because you know that for the next two months it’s going to be really tough – a lot of games.”

Fabregas added: “I chose this challenge because I felt it could be this way. I didn’t come here to just play well and that’s it. I came here to win trophies and if I could play well and enjoy myself, all the better.

“The most important thing for me is we know what we are doing, we know when we defend, when we have to attack, when we slow the pace, or go quicker.

“Right now, we are doing that very well and, potentially, this team can be very good.

“But we have to win trophies. No-one remembers if there was a great team and you don’t win trophies. We have to win and that will say a lot from us and people will judge it how they want to.”
