Gus Poyet claims the FA's decision to punish Sunderland is unfair

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet believes the decision by the Football Association to punish the club for failing to control their players is unfair.

The sanction resulted from the recent 1-1 draw against Everton when Sunderland players surrounded referee Lee Mason after he awarded a penalty against them.

Sunderland were handed a £20,000 fine by the FA earlier this week, but Poyet reckons the his players were just showing some fervour.

The Uruguayan believes the game is changing and English football has to adapt that or risk being cut adrift.

Passion

“I think there is a fine line between respect and control and passion,” Poyet said ahaed of Saturday's match at Leicester.

“I would call on everyone to be very careful when we charge clubs, and I’m not talking about my team, I’m talking about any club in England.

“There has to be a line in there, but we need to accept that it’s a game that people want to win.

“Don’t make your own players, and now I’m talking about England as well, don’t make your English players not care about winning or losing a game, about complaining, not complaining, because then when you play internationals you will suffer.

“The manager in charge of any team doing everything by the rules is going to be on the losing side.”
