Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a fractured rib against West Ham last Saturday.

The Spaniard was substituted in the 74th minute of the 2-1 home victory and United say they will 'continue to monitor his progress over the next few weeks'.

The injury is the second suffered by the £28m summer recruit from Athletic Bilbao, who was forced to sit out three matches earlier in the season after suffering an ankle injury in training.

The United midfielder vowed on social media to return to action as quickly as possible, he wrote on social media: "A real shame this injury, but now's not the time to feel sorry for myself. I'm already working to be back as soon as possible!"

Hererra's injury adds to United boss Louis van Gaal's escalating problems with Wayne Rooney banned for three games and Ashley Young, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones all out injured.

All are likely to miss United's final fixture before the international break against Everton on Sunday but van Gaal is hopeful at least Jones and Carrick will be back for the away trip to West Bromwich Albion on October 20.
