The 23-year-old had been a target for Magpies' boss Alan Pardew for two years before completing the capture in January.
De Jong had endured a frustrating time in the Bundesliga after falling out with Borussia Monchengladbach boss Lucien Favre, and saw his first-team opportunities limited as a result.
However, the Dutch hitman is adamant he can prove himself in England.
"I'm really happy to get this opportunity to play," De Jong told the Newcastle Chronicle.
"It's a club that really wants me. It's a great club in England and the Premier League is a massive competition.
"I'm already enjoying my time here. I have a good feeling about it. Newcastle have been after me for a few years now, from when I was at FC Twente, and that gives me a good feeling."
An under-pressure Pardew will be hoping that his new striker will find his scoring touch sooner rather than later, with the Magpies without a goal in their previous four Premier League outings.
"I'm really motivated. The first half of the season hasn't been nice for me because I didn't play much," De Jong added.
"I just want to show my talent, score goals and be successful again. That's why I'm here.
"My goalscoring record in Holland was very good and hopefully I can show that here."
Newcastle are back in action on Sunday when they entertain Aston Villa at St James' Park.
