Stoke City have admitted defeat in their bid to sign midfielder Lee Cattermole from Sunderland.
Sources at Stoke suggested Sunderland had accepted an improved offer for the midfielder, who was thought to be heading south for talks.
Now sources in the north-east say Cattermole, the club's former captain will not be sold.
There was further disappointed for the Potters when a move for pacy Rennes winger Jonathan Pitroipa, 27, fell apart because of administrative delays on the part of the Ligue 1 club.
Sunderland, meanwhile strengthened their midfield earlier on deadline day with the transfer of Liam Bridcutt.
Bridcutt signed a three-and-a-half-year deal after Brighton accepted an undisclosed fee for the Scotland international.
