Liverpool midfielder Kristoffer Peterson has signed a one-year extension at Anfield, but is looking to head out on loan as his search for regular first-team football continues.

The Swedish winger joined Liverpool at the age of 16 and recently impressed on loan with League One side Tranmere.

Peterson made six league appearances for the Rovers during a month-long loan deal and also featured in the second round of the FA Cup as Peterborough beat Tranmere 5-0 at London Road.

Although the 19-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut for the Reds, he has featured regularly in the club's Under-21 campaign and is delighted to have secured a new deal.

"It feels terrific," Peterson told Fotbollskanalen.se. "It is actually kind of a shock. A few months ago I didn't believe this would happen."

"Brendan [Rodgers] wanted me to sign a contract as soon as possible. It was me and two others who got new contracts.

"This is the biggest motivation boost in my career. This is the biggest I have ever experienced."

Despite being overjoyed at earning the approval of manager Rodgers, Peterson is eager to keep improving and understands at this stage, loan deals are his best option.

Confidence

"A few matches for the reserves per month is not enough. During February, we have to look at the different options which exist. Allsvenskan is one of the good options for Kristoffer."

Per Jonsson

"Of course, I am aiming for the first team," he added. "Liverpool would not have offered me a contract in case they did not have confidence in me.

"The first step is to go on-loan as soon as possible; I want to play first team football.

"Then if Liverpool have other plans for me, it is obvious that I will stay."

Peterson's agent, Per Jonsson revealed he could return his native Sweden with a number of Allsvenskan clubs said to be interested in the winger.

"It's great that Liverpool got confidence in him." Jonsson told Fotbolldirekt.se.

"But everyone understands that he needs to play matches now. Most probably he will be sent on-loan.
