Stoke City are to be given the Freedom of the City of Stoke-on-Trent to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the club.
They will be honoured by the Lord Mayor's Office and club chairman Peter Coates was thrilled with the news.
"We are delighted and honoured to have been handed the Freedom of the City of Stoke-on-Trent," he said.
"It is an enormous honour, especially in this our 150th anniversary year.
"As a club, we place great importance on playing an important role within our local community.
"The profile of being in the Premier League is greater now than it has ever been and it's important we help the city of Stoke-on-Trent continue to thrive, as it has done in recent years."
Provided the award is ratified by the city council, it will be presented at a special ceremony on 4 December.
Legendary Stoke and England winger Sir Stanley Matthews was given the same award in 1963.
