Sky Sports sources understand Everton have made an enquiry for Wigan midfielder James McCarthy.
McCarthy has been linked with a possible move to Everton all summer following Roberto Martinez's appointment as manager at Goodison Park.
Wigan boss Owen Coyle revealed earlier this week that they had received enquires for McCarthy,, but that no bids had been made as yet for the former Hamilton man.
Martinez is a huge fan of the Republic of Ireland international and is thought to be keen on being reunited with the 22-year-old.
Martinez is believed to have identified McCarthy as a ready-made replacement for Manchester United target Marouane Fellaini should the Belgian move to Old Trafford.
Everton could face competition for McCarthy with Newcastle also thought to be keen on the player having expressed an interest in acquiring his services.
