Newcastle must fend off interest from at least two other clubs if they are going to sign Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
Pardew has enquired about Gomis but is yet to table an offer and Aston Villa, Swansea and Cardiff have also been linked with the French international.
The Magpies may have to move fast in the transfer market as Lyon chairman and owner Jean-Michel Aulas has admitted that two other clubs are keen to sign the 27-year-old.
When asked whether teams were pursuing Gomis, Aulas said: "Yes at least 3".
Aulas revealed Newcastle's approach by telling the French media: "there is an interest of Newcastle for Gomis. We wait from them to come to us with an offer".
Pardew is keen to add more firepower to his side and Gomis caught his eye by firing 18 goals for the Ligue 1 side last season.
Newcastle have also been linked with Aston Villa striker Darren Bent and Benfica's Oscar Cardozo.
