Newcastle have agreed a fee with Montpellier for defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Newcastle have thrashed out a deal with the French champions, and they now only have to agree personal terms with the player.
Central defender Yanga-Mbiwa, 23, would add strength to a back-four which has struggled all season.
With captain Fabricio Coloccini possibly leaving Tyneside this month because of personal problems, his arrival could hardly come at a better time.
He would become the Magpies' second transfer window signing after fellow France international Mathieu Debuchy.
Boss Alan Pardew will however not be taking his arrival for granted - he thought he had striker Loic Remy in the bag last week, but he opted to join QPR instead.
