Star forward Michu might not have been a Swansea City player if the club had managed to complete the permanent signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to Michael Laudrup.

Iceland international Sigurdsson impressed on loan at the Liberty Stadium last season and was close to staying on a long-term contract.

However, the move broke down when former manager Brendan Rodgers left for Liverpool and Sigurdsson went on to sign for Swansea's Sunday opponents, Tottenham Hotspur.

Rodgers' successor, Laudrup, wanted to keep Sigurdsson but has not lost too much sleep after completing a contender for signing of the season in bringing in 13-goal Michu as a replacement.

"When I saw what he had done for Swansea last season, of course I would have liked Sigurdsson to stay with us," said Laudrup.

"But I realised very, very soon that it was not going to be possible.

"He wasn't our player and, when players who are on loan do well, they either go back to their own club or they go to the highest bidder.

"Sigurdsson ended up at Tottenham and I think he has to be very grateful to Swansea, because he and Swansea together got him a big contract at a big club.

"Would we have signed Michu if he had stayed? Probably not, because he is the same position."
