Brazil star signs new five-year deal

David Luiz has signed a new five-year deal at Chelsea, committing his future to the club until 2017. The Brazlian defender signed for the west London club from Benfica in a deal worth around £21million 19 months ago. Speculation had surrounded the future of the 25-year-old this summer after he had been linked with a potential move to Primera Liga giants Barcelona. However, the unorthodox central defender, who has been a big hit with the Blues fans since his arrival from Portugal, has committed his future to the European champions. While his penchant for getting into the opposition's box has been praised, at times his defensive ability and awareness have been seriously questioned. Luiz has played 59 times since his move to Stamford Bridge and has scored five goals for the club, with his most recent goal coming against Bolton inFebruary. "I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea," Luiz told the club's official website. 'It is a great club and I look forward to winning more trophies here. "I want to play for a long time at the top level which is what playing for Chelsea means. "I love everything about the club and especially the fans, who have made me very welcome and given me great support."
