Ex-Crewe captain wants to help lead Lambert's revolution

New Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood is aiming to make an instant impact in the Premier League. Westwood, 22, joined Villa from League One side Crewe Alexandra just hours before last Friday's transfer deadline. He has made almost 150 league appearances since emerging from the Railwaymen's famed youth academy, but has never played at a higher level than the third tier. The vast majority of his experience has been in League Two, where he led Crewe to promotion through the play-offs last season. Villa boss Paul Lambert has backed the ex-Alex captain to cope with the step up to the top-flight.

Targets

And Westwood, who believes he has a similar playing style to Manchester United's Michael Carrick, is ready for the challenge after signing a four-year deal at Villa Park. "I want to settle in quickly and hit the ground running," Westwood told the club's official website. "I am looking forward to the challenge, that's what being a footballer is all about, progressing and setting yourself different targets. I'm on that track now. "As soon as I got here I went into the manager's office to speak to him and he said he was looking at younger lads to step up and take us to the next level. I very much want us to be part of that. "I have been waiting a long time for this. I feel I did my time at Crewe and now was the right time to move on and give myself a new challenge."
