Signings will improve Sunderland, says experienced defender

Sunderland defender Titus Bramble claims the club's new signings have given everyone at the Stadium of Light a lift. The Black Cats had a quiet start to their summer spending with the free transfer arrivals of Carlos Cuellar and Louis Saha their first deals of the window. But Martin O'Neill has since splashed out on Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson for a combined fee in excess of £20million. Both men made their first appearances for the club in Tuesday's Capital One Cup win over Morecambe, and Bramble has already noticed the impact of the new players. "The signings have given the place a lift - I could tell that as soon as I walked into the building," Bramble told the club's official website. "I've played against Adam many times before and it's definitely better to be playing with him than against him. "In Adam, Steven, Louis Saha and Carlos we've got four fantastic players and I'm looking forward to working with them.

Competition

"We need competition in every position because it keeps the lads on their toes. "You have to be sharp in training because if you lose your place you know it could be three or four weeks, or more, until you're back in the side." In the match itself, two goals from James McClean, both assisted by Johnson, were enough to see off Morecambe 2-0. And Bramble, who played the full 90 minutes, was pleased with a job well done. "Games like that are never easy - we had to approach it in a professional way and that's what we did," said Bramble. "On a personal level it was nice to come back in. The lads were fantastic in a difficult game. We had the right attitude and got the job done."
