Fulham have seen their initial offer for Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes rejected, Sky Sports can confirm.
The Cottagers remain interested in the Scottish Under-21 international and he is being lined up as the replacement for Clint Dempsey - who does seem destined for a move to Liverpool.
With that in mind Sky Sports understands a bid was lodged with the West Yorkshire outfit late last month - but this was rejected out of hand as being too low.
The offer was believed to be in the region of £2million with add-ons but Sky Sports understands this is well below what Huddersfield would expect for Rhodes - who scored over 40 goals last year.
Fulham, though, are not the only side interested in Rhodes, with a number of Premier League clubs monitoring the situation.
However, their biggest rival could come from the Championship with Blackburn Rovers ready to enter the bidding.
Rovers, who have recently lost new signing Leon Best to injury, are back in the market for a high-profile striker and they are understood to have made an enquiry.
Town told Rovers they did not want to sell - but both Fulham and Blackburn remain hot on the situation and could make fresh approaches this week.
