Stoke closing in on US defender

Stoke City have confirmed they are close to finalising a deal to sign Houston Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron. The Potters have fought off late interest from Everton to agree a $2.5million (£1.6m) fee with the MLS side for the 27-year-old, who has also now successfully agreed personal terms. Cameron will now join up with the rest of the squad at their pre-season base in Orlando, where he will undergo a medical. One stumbling block could be Cameron's work permit as he has not played the required 75 per cent of the USA's games over the past two years. However, Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes is confident a permit will eventually be granted via an appeal. "Whilst we would not normally confirm a transfer until everything is complete, we have agreed a fee and personal terms in this instance and the player will now join up with the squad in Orlando to have his medical," Scholes told the club's official website. "Assuming that this goes according to plan, the completion of the transfer will then be subject to us obtaining a work permit, which will probably be done by way of an appeal by early August ahead of the new season."

Options

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is delighted with his latest capture, believing his versatility in particular will prove a real asset. He has also dismissed any concerns about the player stepping up from the MLS to the Premier League. "He will give us plenty of options. He can play at centre-back, across midfield and even at full-back as well," said Pulis. "With the squad that we have, it's always useful to have players who are versatile, so in that sense he will be a good asset for the club. "We believe that he is a player who can cope with the Premier League because he has done exceptionally well over the past year. "We have watched him a few times, but he also comes with great recommendations from many who consider him one of the top players in the MLS."
