Saints manager has no intention of letting full-back leave

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins has warned potential suitors against making a move for teenage sensation Luke Shaw. The 16-year-old is the latest Saints youngster to be talked about as somebody who could follow in the footsteps of players like Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He has been linked with a high-profile move to Chelsea, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also reported to have shown an interest. However, Adkins has stressed that Southampton do not want to lose any of their emerging stars as they look to establish themselves in the Premier League. "Luke Shaw is a big part of our future plans," Adkins said in the Daily Star Sunday. "We have got no intention, believe you me, of letting any of our young players move on. "We want them in the first team in the Premier League, playing for Southampton Football Club."

Mentality

Adkins is looking forward to the challenge of competing in the top flight after winning promotion last season, although Southampton could not have been handed a tougher start after learning they must take on defending champions Manchester City away from home on the opening weekend. "We're in the Premier League now because we've earned the right to be there," said Adkins. "We've got to be positive in everything we do and go and look forward to playing these games with the mentality to win them."
