Scot wanted to achieve more for the club's supporters

Former Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has expressed his regret at letting down the club's supporters after a disappointing Premier League campaign. McLeish was sacked earlier this week after a frustrating 11 months at the helm following his controversial move from bitter rivals Birmingham City. Villa won just four home games last season as they were sucked into a relegation battle before eventually finishing in 16th position. Villa supporters protested when the Scot was appointed shortly after Birmingham's relegation last summer and he struggled to win them over following a series of dire results. But the 53-year-old insists he was not wrong to leave Blues and cross the city to Villa.

Honour

"When I accepted the role as manager of Aston Villa football club I was acutely aware of the responsibility I had to find the best way to serve the great traditions of one of the finest clubs in professional football," said McLeish. "I was truly honoured to have been given the opportunity to manage the club, which plays such an important part in the fabric of the local community and to its worldwide fan base. "I relished the challenge and, together with my loyal and very capable staff, dedicated all of my efforts into moulding a successful team. "My only regret in leaving now is we weren't able to achieve more for the supporters and their high expectations. "I have nothing but the highest respect for the club and sincerely wish it and the fans great success in the future."
