Jewell wishes midfielder well after deciding not to offer extension

Paul Jewell has confirmed that veteran midfielder Lee Bowyer will not have his contract extended this summer at Ipswich Town. The 34-year-old moved to Portman Road last year on a free transfer from Birmingham City and has gone on to make 24 starts with a further five appearances from the bench. Bowyer had previously stated that he would like to stay at Portman Road, but Jewell has decided not to offer another 12-month deal as he looks to assemble a younger squad. Jewell has nevertheless paid tribute to Bowyer for his attitude and wished him well for the future.

Terrific

"He is a terrific lad and a terrific pro," said Jewell. "He has been great around the place, especially with the young lads. He has a good career ahead of him coaching as he has terrific knowledge and he is a real good guy and good role model for young players. "Whatever he does, he wants to win. He wants to continue playing. I am sure there won't be a shortage of takers for him. "He goes with our best wishes, but we are going down a bit of a younger route."
