David Vaughan is enjoying life as a fixture of Sunderland's midfield under Martin O'Neill.

O'Neill took charge in early December and Wales international Vaughan has since emerged as an important member of his preferred starting line-up.

Vaughan has chipped in with a couple of goals to help Sunderland move up to 12th in the Premier League table.

"I would have liked to have played better in some games, but you can't be at your best in every single match."

Quotes of the week

"I'm pleased to be playing and it's good to have been given a run in the side," the former Blackpool player told The Journal.

Regular

"I think I've started all the games under Martin O'Neill and hopefully that will continue.

"I would have liked to have played better in some games, but you can't be at your best in every single match.

"I've managed to chip in with a couple of goals though, and they've been decent strikes too.

"I'm not sure whether I'll be able to keep on scoring goals like those, but I'll do my best!"

Spectacular

Both of Vaughan's strikes - against Blackburn in O'Neill's first game in charge and in the 4-1 win over Wigan at the turn of the year - have been spectacular efforts.

"The manager hasn't said anything to me about it (shooting from distance)," he added.

"When an opportunity comes, I just want to have a go at it.

"The confidence that comes once you score a couple of goals is also a factor.

"I don't tend to break into the box a great deal, so most of my goals are from outside the area."
