Stuttgart leading Lakic chase

Stuttgart are in pole position to sign Srdjan Lakic, according to the Wolfsburg striker's agent.

Hannover and Monchengladbach also linked with striker

Stuttgart are in pole position to sign Srdjan Lakic, according to the Wolfsburg striker's agent. The Croatian has failed to make the breakthrough at the Volkswagen Arena following his move from Kaiserslautern at the start of the season. Lakic was originally signed by Wolfsburg before Felix Magath agreed to take over as coach last year, but he has failed to convince and could be one of six players to leave in January. Stuttgart general manager Fredi Bobic recently admitted an interest in Lakic and the 28-year-old's agent claims the Mercedes-Benz Arena club are leading the pursuit. Representative Alen Augustinic told the Stuttgarter Zeitung newspaper: "There are several clubs interested in him, but Stuttgart are clearly ahead. "That is the way things stand at the moment." Hannover and Borussia Monchengladbach are understood to be Stuttgart's closest rivals for Lakic, who scored 35 times for Kaiserslautern but has yet to open his account for Wolfsburg. Mainz have ruled out their interest in Lakic after general manager Christian Heidel announced he was too expensive.
