Wales international wants to see his side improve defensively

David Vaughan believes Sunderland possess enough team spirit to see them climb out of the relegation mire. The Black Cats are just one place above the bottom three, having lost four out of their last five Premier League fixtures. In both of their last two outings, they have found themselves behind to early goals. Against West Brom they managed to fight back to earn a point, but a revived Arsenal side proved too strong for them on Sunday as Robin van Persie scored a late goal to seal a 2-1 win.

Spirit

Vaughan, who joined Steve Bruce's side in the summer, feels their fighting qualities have been demonstrated by the way they have fought back in these matches. "The spirit is there - this team doesn't lie down and give up," the midfielder told the club's official website. "We have to cut out these early goals because we're not going to win many games if we keep doing that. "But we are fighting for each other and fighting for the results we need."
