Liverpool skipper taking domestic cups seriously

Steven Gerrard has set his sights on lifting a trophy this season and declared that Liverpool will be taking the domestic cups seriously. Gerrard has played at Wembley for England many times but never for his club, with his two FA Cup and League Cup triumphs coming at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff while the home of English football was being rebuilt. The midfielder is now determined to fulfil his dream of leading the Reds out at Wembley as he strives to end their long wait for silverware. With Liverpool not competing in Europe this term and the battle for Premier League glory sure to be keenly contested, Gerrard intends to make the most of the FA Cup and Carling Cup. Having returned from a groin problem in Wednesday's Carling Cup victory at Brighton that secured a place in the last 16, Gerrard is looking to go all the way in the competition. He said: "Being captain as well, I want nothing more than to go to Wembley with the rest of the lads and lift a cup. "We haven't been to a major cup final for a long time so we've got to take every cup seriously - especially when there's no Europe. That makes it a bit easier for us to put stronger sides out. "Kenny Dalglish has assembled a fantastic squad and we've got a couple of good players for each position. So even when he mixes it up or rests people, we've still got a strong side.

Everybody's smiling

"When you play for Liverpool it's all about winning trophies. We've got to take every cup competition seriously. "That was the message from the manager before we went out at Brighton. He said we want to be one step closer to a major cup final." Gerrard's injury lay-off has prevented him from playing much under Dalglish, but he recognises that there is a more positive mood around the camp and is predicting a bright future. He said: "I've been really happy with what I've seen. Since Kenny's come in, there has been a lot of happy faces around the training ground. The supporters are happy and I think 90 per cent of the football has been fantastic as well. "Take away Tottenham and it's been exactly what I've been hoping for. That has made me even more desperate and hungry to get back among the lads. "Yes, it's been frustrating, but it's also been nice to see lads progressing well. "The signings made have been good and from top to bottom everybody at the club is smiling."
