Skysports.com understands David Wheater has agreed a deal with Bolton and is set to seal a switch.
The Middlesbrough man has already spoken with the Trotters once during the January transfer window, but was unable to reach an agreement on that occasion.
Owen Coyle's men refused to give up the chase, though, and returned with a renewed effort to land the highly-rated centre-half.
It appears their persistence has paid off, with it understood that personal terms have now been agreed with Wheater.
The 23-year-old, who has spent his entire career to date with Boro, is now expected to put pen to paper on a long-term contract at the Reebok Stadium in the next few days.
He does have prior experience of life in the Premier League, having made the breakthrough at Boro during their time in the top flight.
Having now returned to that lofty perch, the former England U21 international will be hoping to force his way into Fabio Capello's thoughts.
