Dutch youngster handed contract

Birmingham City have handed a new contract to Dutch starlet Akwasi Asante, skysports.com understands. The 18-year-old striker arrived in England five years ago when his family moved to the country. Asante had been with Haarlem's youth academy and it did not take him long to find a British club with Birmingham snapping him up. He has since made excellent progress through the ranks and has even made it on to the bench for the first team. Now Alex McLeish has rewarded his progress by handing him a two-and-half-year contract. McLeish recently sang Asante's praises after he scored five goals in a 6-0 win over Spurs' youth side. "He's a young centre-forward, strong, quick and we believe he has got a chance," said McLeish. "He has caught the eye, no doubt about it. We have been impressed by Akwasi this season and he has trained with us, actually, before he scored the goals against Spurs." Birmingham have also tied down Asante's youth team-mate Fraser Kerr, 18, also on a two-and-a-half year deal.
