Warnock is looking to reinforce his attack after strikers Jamie Mackie and Patrick Agyemang both suffered broken legs.
McCarthy joined the Hammers last January from Blackburn Rovers for £2.5million but he has yet to open his account for the club.
He has made just 13 appearances for West Ham, with 10 of those coming as a substitute.
And McCarthy's on-going weight problems have been a problem during his time at Upton Park.
