The Bulgaria international, who joined the Trotters on a free transfer from Manchester City this summer, is not renowned for his defensive qualities.

Robinson acknowledges there are few wide-men in the Premier League with the pace and trickery of his 31-year-old team-mate.

But the Wanderers' left-back has to ensure Petrov does not leave him too exposed.

"Martin's an out-and-out attacking player and you've got to appreciate what he does and what he did at Manchester City," said Robinson in the Sun.

"He is the player that he is and you've got to let him be free and go and attack teams.

Energy

"Sometimes it can be hard because you've got to put reins on him to save his energy."

Petrov was Bolton's biggest summer signing and his arrival has pushed Matty Taylor to the bench.

Robbie Blake also joined from Burnley while Ivan Klasnic made a permanent move from Nantes having been on loan last season.

Former Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis has boosted manager Owen Coyle's options by making a long-awaited return from a knee injury and Robinson feels the Bolton squad is in better shape than it has been in for years.

"Now we've got quality players that can come on and change games for us," he added.
