Catania director Pietro Lo Monaco has admitted he should have sold the club's best players this summer.
While most clubs are delighted to get through to the transfer deadline with the nucleus of their squad intact, Lo Monaco admits Catania needed to raise some cash.
The official was so determined to find out how the current crop of players would progress this season that he believes he lost sight of the bigger picture.
Lo Monaco recognises that Catania's key men might not be worth so much next year and regrets turning down offers.
"[We] made a mistake in not selling our big players. I am convinced I made a mistake, because I had the chance to sell players worth a total of €50 million," he told
Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.
"A club as small as ours cannot afford to keep players and must renew constantly.
"We had done well and wanted to see this squad together for another year, so I lost sight of the objectives of a club like ours.
"What's worth €50m in today's market could be €25m next season."
Llama
Catania midfielder Cristian Llama, meanwhile, has set his sights on a return to action as soon as possible.
Llama suffered a serious knee injury last season and is still thought to be a month away from getting back to full fitness.
"I am in a hurry. I cannot wait to return and be at the full disposal of the coach [Marco Giampaolo]," the Argentine revealed to
Itasportpress.it.
"Currently, I am training as hard as I can to recover in as little time as possible.
"My return? I do not know the exact time, but I think that within a month, I could be ready to play."
