Sky Sports News understands that Matt Derbyshire is undergoing a medical at Birmingham ahead of a possible loan deal.
As revealed by skysports.com last week, the Olympiakos striker is on course to join the St Andrews club after Alex McLeish decided to target a new striker.
Former Blackburn player Derbyshire, 24, appears interested in return to England and has therefore travelled from Greece.
If the ex-England Under 21 international successfully passes his medical, he is expected to sign a contract in the next few days.
McLeish reiterated after his side's 2-2 draw at Sunderland in Saturday's Premier League season-opener that he felt his squad was short of attacking options.
With Kevin Phillips injured, the Birmingham boss has stepped up his pursuit of Derbyshire and reports suggest a loan fee has already been paid to Olympiakos.
McLeish has brought in giant Serbian Nikola Zigic this summer, but prior to the weekend he admitted defeat in his pursuit of AZ Alkmaar striker Moussa Dembele.
