Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has withdrawn the offer of a trial to former Celtic defender Bobo Balde.

Blues boss has his quota of centre-halves

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has withdrawn the offer of a trial to former Celtic defender Bobo Balde. The experienced centre-half is available on a free transfer after leaving Celtic and had been offered the chance to earn a move to St Andrews. However, since expressing an initial interest in Balde, McLeish has added Scott Dann, Roger Johnson and Giovany Espinoza to his squad. McLeish admits that he is now happy with his defensive options and is no longer pursuing a deal for Balde, who has linked up with Wolves on their pre-season trip to Australia.

Disappointed

"I spoke to Bobo and we were very honest and open with each other," said McLeish. "I said I've got my quota of centre-halves and that I'm going to have to withdraw the invitation. "He was maybe disappointed, but I know that Bobo will get something." The Birmingham boss also confirmed that he is not looking to sign Quinton Fortune after the former Manchester United midfielder joined the club for training. He added: "We're just training Quinton as a favour. I know a mutual friend and he asked if I could provide facilities for Quinton. "There's not a deal on the table for Quinton, he is not on trial and it is purely a favour."
