Harry Redknapp has paid tribute to Heurelho Gomes for recovering from a poor start to the season.
The Brazilian goalkeeper arrived at White Hart Lane with a big reputation last summer but made a series of mistakes in the first few months of the campaign.
He attracted ridicule from the media and Harry Redknapp was widely expected to replace him during the winter transfer window.
Carlo Cudicini came in from Chelsea to compete for a place in the side but Gomes remained in favour due to some improved performances.
The 28-year-old eradicated the errors from his game and finished the season in excellent form, but it is the way he bounced back from a difficult period that has most impressed Redknapp.
"He's been fantastic considering the start he had and the bad time he went through," Redknapp told Hotspur magazine.
"He's shown great character to come back from where he was."
Redknapp believes Gomes is one of several candidates for Tottenham's player of the season.
The Spurs boss thinks Luka Modric, Aaron Lennon and his four main defenders would also be in the frame.
"That's a tough one," he said. "Aaron Lennon has had a tremendous season, Luka Modric has been outstanding, Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King have done great, the two full-backs Vedran Corluka and Benoit Assou-Ekotto have also enjoyed fantastic campaigns - it's a tough call.
"Gomes has come back from the difficult start he had. I think Luka has been brilliant for us, he's a world-class player."
Tottenham only pulled clear of the relegation battle towards the end of the season and Redknapp has pinpointed the 2-1 victory over Hull City in February as the main turning point.
He explained: "We were still in a dogfight then. If they'd beaten us that night I'm sure that would have been enough for them; they would have been out of it and at the same time, we would have been in even more trouble.
"That result gave us a lot of confidence and you can see that from the results since then. That was a massive win. We'd lost our previous four away games as well and that win gave us a real boost."
