The Magpies are fighting for their Premier League status and even a win at Aston Villa on 'Survival Sunday', live on Sky Sports 1 &HD1, may not be enough.

And former Metz ace Bassong, who is suspended for the trip to Villa Park, confesses he would consider his options if Newcastle sink into the Championship.

The 22-year-old cost the Magpies £500,000 last summer, but he has reportedly impressed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and has indicated that he may consider leaving St James' Park after only one year.

He said in the Daily Telegraph: "In the case that Newcastle go down, then I would have to hold talks with the club after the last game of the season.

Ambitious

"Everybody knows that I am an ambitious boy, and playing Championship football never crossed my mind.

"You have to have a plan for your career, and playing in the second division would be a step backwards."

Meanwhile, centre-back Bassong has added his voice to Newcastle players who have called for Alan Shearer to remain as manager beyond the end of the season.

The former Magpies and England captain arrived on an eight-game SOS mission at the start of April in his first job as boss and he has impressed his players.

Bassong added: "I hope that Alan Shearer will stay, whatever happens on Sunday.

"He makes you forget his so-called lack of experience as a coach thanks to his experience on the pitch."
