Tigers defender expects tough test at former club Bolton

Bernard Mendy is not expecting any favours when Hull City travel to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday despite the links between the two clubs. Tigers manager Phil Brown spent six years at the Reebok as Sam Allardyce's assistant while Mendy himself spent a season on loan with the Trotters in 2002. The club know that they go to Bolton needing a win with Newcastle's success over Middlesbrough on Monday confining them to the bottom three for the first time this season. The Tigers will be desperate to give themselves a fighting chance of survival ahead of the last day of the season when Manchester United come to town but Mendy is not taking anything for granted against his former club. "I played for Bolton for one season and it was a very good experience for me," he told the Hull Daily Mail. "I like Bolton as a club but I expect no favours from them. It will be the same situation again, we can't afford to lose, we have to go out to win."

Improvement

During his solitary season at the Reebok the Frenchman ironically helped stave off relegation on the last day of the season. Now the 27-year-old feels he is a better player than the one who first came to England six years ago and he insists that can only be good for his current club. "I think I am a better player here than I was at Bolton," he added. "I am a more mature player. I was young when at Bolton, I now have more experience and maturity. "I don't feel the pressure. I like this kind of situation. Before when I was younger I may have found this situation difficult but not now. "No one wants to go back to the Championship, we need to be strong mentally, go forward and believe. "We have to go for a win. We need to go forward and believe for the fans, for the city, for the manager and everybody has to believe we can stay in the Premier League."
