Newcastle boss Alan Shearer has assured Ryan Taylor and Kevin Nolan they have a future on Tyneside.
The duo were dropped by the Magpies manager for Monday's goalless draw with Portsmouth, with neither even making the bench.
The pair were signed for a combined £7million by previous boss Joe Kinnear in January, but Shearer chose Alan Smith to occupy the central midfield position.
Shearer has set Taylor and Nolan the task of getting themselves back in the team as Newcastle fight against relegation.
"There will be other chances for them," Shearer told The Sun.
"Alan Smith gave us everything in midfield and fully justified his selection.
"We just wanted to try something different."
