Reds midfielder does not regret international appearance

Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has insisted he made the right decision to play for Israel on Saturday. A hamstring injury had prevented Benayoun from playing for his club for a fortnight prior to the international period. He was nevertheless so desperate to appear for his country that he risked the wrath of Rafa Benitez and turned out for Israel against Greece over the weekend. Unfortunately he could not complete the match and had to be carried off 14 minutes from time after suffering a calf strain. Benayoun still does not believe he was wrong to link up with Israel, after saying before the match that missing out would have been the 'biggest disappointment' of his career'. "I made the right decision, and that's it," he told the Liverpool Daily Post. "We hope we'll win in Greece, but a draw isn't that bad either. Still, our aim is to win in Crete." Israel drew 1-1 at home to Greece on Saturday and face the same opponents away on Wednesday. Israel are currently one point behind joint leaders Greece and Switzerland in World Cup qualifying Group Two.
