Skysports.com understands Newcastle are in talks with Wigan to sign Ryan Taylor.
Magpies boss Joe Kinnear has targeted a move for Taylor to help bolster his injury-hit squad.
Taylor's future at Wigan has been the subject of speculation for some time, with the player's current contract to expire in the summer.
Newcastle are now believed to have agreed an undisclosed fee for Taylor and the player has been given permission to travel to the North East to hold talks and undergo a medical.
Taylor is an attractive proposition for Newcastle as he can play at the back or in midfield and his arrival would ease their injury problems.
A couple of other Premier League clubs are believed to be chasing Taylor, but Newcastle are confident of luring the former England Under 21 international to St James' Park.
Taylor, who has a knack of scoring against Newcastle, is thought to be keen on a move to Tyneside and Newcastle hope to agree a deal to have him available for Sunday's clash with Sunderland.
