Benfica striker to undergo medical ahead of loan move

West Bromwich Albion are closing in on the signing of Portugal striker Ariza Makukula from Benfica. Makukula is travelling to England on Tuesday to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to the Hawthorns. Benfica have confirmed that the 27-year-old is set to join the Premier League strugglers on loan with a view to a permanent switch. The former Nantes and Sevilla forward has struggled to force his way into coach Quique Sanchez Flores' plans this season, but is under contract to Benfica until 2012. If Makukula successfully passes a medical, he will become West Brom manager Tony Mowbray's second striker signing of the transfer window. Mowbray has already brought in Jay Simpson on loan from Arsenal and has been linked with Nurnberg's Angelos Charisteas and Nancy's Marc-Antoine Fortune.
