Marseille have turned their attention to Boubacar Sanogo after giving up on securing the services of Henrik Larsson.
The Ligue 1 giants have publicly announced their intention to bolster their attacking options during the January transfer window and have drawn up a shortlist of potential candidates.
They had hoped to persuade Swedish legend Larsson to prolong his career and head to France, but have grown impatient at the striker's refusal to make a definitive decision.
As a result, Eric Gerets has now identified Werder Bremen's out-of-favour Ivorian forward Sanogo as his No.1 target.
The African ace has struggled to hold down regular football in Germany this season and has admitted to being intrigued by the prospect of heading to Stade Velodrome.
"My representatives have met Marseille chairman Pape Diouf," he told Le 10 Sport.
"Does the offer interest me? Yes, obviously.
"I am happy at Werder, but for an African it is always nice to play to play close to the Mediterranean.
"Marseille are also the most loved team in Africa because they have had so many Africans play there."
