Dave Whelan accepts Emile Heskey's future at Wigan Athletic is 'hanging in the balance' ahead of the January transfer window.
Heskey is out of contract at the end of the season and reports suggest the England international will not sign a new deal.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce has been keen to hang on to the striker, rather than cash in on the 30-year-old in the New Year.
However, with reports claiming the Latics are close to sealing a deal for Colombian hit-man Hugo Rodallega Martinez, Wigan could be tempted to accept an offer for Heskey.
He has been linked with a return to Liverpool and Latics chairman Whelan did not rule out Heskey leaving the JJB Stadium in January.
"Everybody knows Emile Heskey's future hangs in the balance right now ahead of the transfer window opening on Thursday," said Whelan in the Wigan Evening Post.
"Emile is out of contract at the end of the season, but there have been no approaches for him.
"If Emile eventually moves on, we naturally have to find a quality replacement.
"We totally respect Emile and it all depends on what he wants to do.
"I honestly feel this could be his last career move, but obviously we would love to see him stay at Wigan."
