PSV Eindhoven concede their pursuit of Mark van Bommel may be scuppered by a team from England.
The reigning Eredivisie champions are keen to take the Dutch international back to his homeland over the summer.
The midfielder is currently in the final year of his contract at German giants Bayern Munich, with his future shrouded in uncertainty.
He has been offered a new deal to keep him at the Allianz Arena, but he is not expected to make a decision on whether or not to sign the contract until the New Year.
PSV are confident that they would be among the contenders should the 31-year-old decide to move on, but accept that they would struggle to bring Van Bommel back to the Philips Stadion should an offer be tabled from a top Premier League side.
"His club Bayern Munich want to become the German champions, they will not let him go during the winter break," PSV director Jan Reker told Studio Voetbal.
"But reports that Mark isn't interested in a new PSV adventure are untrue.
"Van Bommel never said 'no' to PSV, but if he can join a big club in England, like Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United, he will go there."
While it remains to be seen whether Van Bommel will opt for a second spell at PSV, Andre Ooijer is another former star occupying the minds of the Eindhoven-based club.
"Yes, something must happen," added Reker.
"With that in mind, Andre Ooijer is an option.
"We have had no contact, but we are thinking about that."
One player definitely staying in Holland is Ibrahim Afellay, with Reker dismissing reports of interest from Inter Milan and Manchester City in the 22-year-old playmaker.
"Not a single club has called us (about Afellay)," he said.
