Boro star aims for England place

David Wheater has his sights set on an England cap after he was named North East Footballer and Young Footballer of the Year. Middlesbrough star Wheater was crowned the North East's top man by the region's Football Writers' Association ahead of team-mate Stewart Downing and Sunderland's Kenwyne Jones. The young defender, who has been included in a number of England squads, is now hoping to realise his dream of a full cap. "I didn't expect to have the year I did and I'm just glad the manager stuck with me when injuries to other players cleared up. It just went on from there," he said, "It's been unbelievable, a fantastic year for me. It's nice to get awards - and a big thank you to all the football writers who voted for me - but what I really want to do is win a trophy with Boro and hopefully win an England cap."
