Former Newcastle midfielder expected to join on Tuesday

Derby manager Paul Jewell is hoping to clinch a deal for Laurent Robert within the next 48 hours. The former Newcastle midfielder, who has most recently had a spell with Spanish side Levante, was invited for a trial earlier this week. He made a big impression and is now likely to put pen-to-paper on a six-month contract. Jewell said: "He's done exceptionally well in training, and hopefully he will be a Derby player on Tuesday. "I would think he will be on a short-term contract to the end of the season, but I don't want to say too much until it's done and dusted." The Rams are ten points adrift of safety and Jewell has wasted little time since the transfer window opened in trying to strengthen his squad. Emmanuel Villa and Danny Mills have already been signed, while Jewell is looking to bring in Robbie Savage from Blackburn. Tottenham's Egyptian midfielder Hossam Ghaly is also understood to be in talks with Derby and could be set to join if a work permit can be sorted out.
