Striker's hamstring injury flares up again

Aston Villa's Patrik Berger has suffered a setback in his bid to shake off a niggling hamstring injury. The 33-year-old striker, who has missed the start of the season with the injury, returned to action as a substitute in the Carling Cup upset to Leicester City. But the former Liverpool man has now suffered a recurrence of the injury in training and may miss Saturday's Premier League clash with West Ham at Villa Park. "Patrik Berger trained and injured himself in training again - the same injury," boss Martin O'Neill told the club's official website.

Scans

"But he's feeling a lot better and the scans that we got back yesterday have given us half decent news. So we'll see." Meanwhile, O'Neill hopes to have Shaun Maloney back to face The Hammers. Maloney missed the dramatic 4-4 draw against Spurs with an ankle injury sustained in the defeat to Leicester but is on the mend. O'Neill added: "Shaun will be fit for Saturday with a bit of luck. He was looking quite good for Spurs and then on Sunday he just didn't feel right."
