Newcastle vice-captain Siem de Jong has returned to training following a knee injury that ruled him out for three months.

The Dutchman revealed his delight on Twitter after taking part in his first training session with the Magpies for two months.

“Finally my boots back on! First session outside,” the 25-year-old playmaker tweeted.

After signing at six-year deal at St James’ Park over the summer, the Holland international made only three starts for Newcastle before suffering the injury in training.

His unavailability came at a difficult time for Alan Pardew’s side, who failed failed to pick up maximum points from their first seven Premier League matches.

They have since turned their form around - winning their last five games in the league which has seen them climb to fifth, level on points with Manchester United who sit above them on goal difference.

De Jong, who signed for a fee of around £6million from Ajax, still faces several weeks of recovery but will look to strengthen Pardew’s revitalised side once fully fit early in the New Year.
